A Newborn Photography Guide for Expecting Mothers

Can you believe how fast your little one grows? It’s amazing to see how quickly your newborn baby can enter a new phase of development. This means you don’t have a very long time to enjoy this newborn phase of your little bundle of happiness. Fortunately, a professional newborn photographer can capture your child’s precious earliest moments so you can cherish them forever. I have created this Austin Newborn Photography Guide for expecting parents.

My name is Haley Grant and I have ten years of experience as a newborn photographer in Austin. You can call me a baby whisperer because making newborn babies comfortable and calm is my superpower. My entire newborn photography session is designed to provide you with the best quality newborn photographs while keeping your baby happy and at ease.

Austin Newborn Photography Guide for expecting parents:

In this guide, I have some special tips so you can make the most of your newborn photoshoot with me.

Schedule Your Session for Optimal Newborn Photos

I suggest scheduling your newborn photography session 3-4 months in advance to ensure your baby’s spot on my calendar. With a maximum of 10 babies accepted per month, space is limited. This allows me to provide each client with individualized care, flexibility, and high-quality service and products. Reserving your baby’s due date ahead of time guarantees your spot as my calendar books out.

Once reserved, and when your baby arrives, we plan the photo date to take place when your baby is between 5-14 days old. This gives the best window for capturing all those cute “newborn curly” poses when your baby is still tucked up in that cozy fetal position.

After two weeks, babies start stretching out their arms and legs more, making those sweet, tucked-in newborn poses next to impossible to achieve. Contact me 3 to 4 months before your due date so I can get your session scheduled.

Take a look at my newborn photography portfolio to see examples of the curled-up poses we’ll aim to recreate with your baby during the session. I’ll be there with you to get your baby into each pose safely and comfortably. My studio is fully equipped with everything needed to keep babies comfortable during their first photo session.

What to Bring and What to Wear

When preparing for your newborn photography session, there’s no need to stress about what to dress your baby in. I have a wide selection of curated props and adorable outfits available for use. I provide all of the wraps, blankets, headbands, bonnets, hats, and other newborn props you see in my portfolio. All you need to bring is your precious little one and a fresh diaper or two. Feel free to bring along something to keep yourself occupied during the session while I work to capture those sweet newborn photos.

All of my newborn sessions are personalized to your color and prop preferences via my Newborn Session Questionnaire. On this questionnaire, you get to specify how I stylize your setups and what outfits we use. With all the accessories, props, and outfits prepared prior to your arrival, we can focus our time together on creating beautiful images without any additional worries. Simply come ready to enjoy the session and relax as I take care of all the details for you.

If you’re opting to have a few family photos taken with your baby, you may be wondering what to wear. When choosing what to wear for your newborn session, opt for simple, neutral-colored clothing free of loud graphics, words, or busy patterns. Such prints can be distracting in photos. Stick to timeless classics like stripes, solids, or subtle prints.

How To Prepare: Feed Baby Before the Photoshoot

Feed your baby right before you leave for your newborn session. Trust me, a content, well-fed newborn leads to the happiest and most cooperative subject for photos! Have some extra bottles and formula or breastmilk on hand just in case your little one gets hungry during the shoot.

Also, try to interact with your baby a bit more than you normally would the morning of the session. This way, they are ready to sleep soundly when they arrive. I recommend using your car seat carrier to bring them into the studio, instead of carrying them in your arms, as we want them nice and sleepy from the car ride.

Did you know that the temperature of the room can impact how sleepy your newborn is? I keep my studio around 78 degrees Fahrenheit to keep your baby nice and cozy between changes. I also use white noise machines to help put babies into that deep, restful sleep.

Relax and Enjoy Quality Time with Your Newborn

As your newborn photographer in Austin, my goal is for you to sit back, relax, and enjoy this special time together. I’ll handle everything from the lighting and angles to setting and getting the right shot.

This session is about capturing the candid beauty of your newborn and this fleeting stage. You don’t need to worry about a thing – just treasuring those baby snuggles is the most important job. Let the moments unfold and leave the technical details to me!

Also, don’t worry if your baby gets fussy; I will help calm the baby down. Just focus on spending quality time with your brand-new bundle of joy. When you see the final portraits, the love and beauty will shine through.
