Bringing your newborn to the studio for their first portraits is truly special! As an Austin newborn photographer, I love it when families involve older siblings. It’s normal for toddlers to feel mixed emotions about a new brother or sister. With some preparation, we can make the session enjoyable for everyone. Here are my top tips for helping toddler siblings feel happy and comfortable during their newborn sibling’s photo shoot:
Start Early

Those first few nights and weeks at home with a newborn can pass by quickly. To avoid sibling possessiveness or uncertainty, start talking about and preparing for the newborn photo shoot! Explain to your toddler what to expect and involve them in the process from the beginning. Have them lay down on their bed at home with a doll to practice holding and being near a baby. It will help prepare them for the newborn session.
Set Expectations
Honesty and transparency are essential when working with young kids. Talk to them clearly about what they can expect at the photo session in a way they’ll understand—mommy, daddy, and the baby will all be there taking pictures together. Explain that they will get to hold the baby during the photography session and make coming to the studio an exciting experience. Build it up as a fun adventure they get to be a part of.
Choose Comfy Outfits

Select outfits for siblings that are comfortable and easy to move and lay down in. Avoid items that might show their belly when they lay down or lift their arms. Loose, soft clothing is best. I always recommend bringing two outfit options for siblings! We can coordinate colors and styles if desired or go for a more complementary yet vibrant contrast, depending on your vision.
Be Flexible

Understand that young children may have unpredictable moods or reactions during the session. If your older child seems hesitant or unwilling to participate in certain poses or setups on any given day, we pivot accordingly. Let it seem like it’s their idea to hold the baby. Follow their lead to keep them calm and engaged.
Offer Rewards
Consider offering small incentives or rewards for good behavior during the session. You can hide small treats in the baby’s wrap for the toddler to find while posing with their new sibling. This surprise can help keep them motivated and their moods lifted.
Set Realistic Expectations
No matter how much we prepare, there’s always the possibility that your older child may struggle to keep their cool and interest for an entire newborn shoot. And you know what? That’s totally normal! Understand that getting sibling pictures may not be guaranteed, but the photographer will do their best to capture them. I aim to always make these experiences as enjoyable and rewarding as possible for siblings.
